New York City — February 2009

After our trip to Latvia in January, Miss Melanie Petrak accompanied me back to New York to visit my Dōjō.  And after a couple of weeks, Melanie retuned to Okinawa to continue her training under Onaga Kaichō at the Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō.     Read more

Summer Training, New York — July 2009

The training session on July 9, 2009 with my deshi Preston Flammang and Joni Warren, was focused on certain concepts of tenshin.
Tenshin
(転身) is perhaps the most important of the three basic elements of Ti.  According to Onaga Kaichō, "Our bodies do not move back and forth, but left or right."     Read more

Summer Gasshuku, Okinawa — July 2009

On July 2009, I visited the Shinjinbukan Honbu Dōjō in Okinawa, Japan.  I was accompanied by my deshi Satō Masaaki, who is a native from Nagano Prefecture, but trains with me in New York City.  We had the opportunity to learn under my teacher Onaga Yoshimitsu Kaichō, as well as to train with other senior members of the Shinjinbukan School.    Read more

Summer Training, Latvia — July and August 2009

During the summer, Artis Pabriks takes advantage of the good weather to train using his outdoor machiwara.  Machiwara training is one of the most important traditions found in Okinawa Ti, taught by Onaga Kaichō at the Shinjinbukan School. Artis built the machiwara at his home Dōjō under the supervision of Onaga Kaichō.     Read more
