GALLERY — LATVIA, JULY & AUGUST 2009 During the summer, Artis Pabriks takes advantage of the good weather to train using his outdoor machiwara. Machiwara training is one of the most important traditions found in Okinawa Ti, taught by Onaga Kaichō at the Shinjinbukan School. Artis built the machiwara at his home Dōjō under the supervision of Onaga Kaichō, see Latvia Gasshuku 2007. Basic Machiwara Drills July 22, 2009 — Artis Pabriks worked on some basic machiwara drills using Ufujichi, which is normally described as a "big hand strike". There are many applications of Ufujichi. The basic drill is designed to coordinate the full extension of the arm with the body and hip rotation. In this case, Artis using a lateral Ufujichi strike from the Naifuanchi stance. Next, Artis practiced more basic drills using Jigotai and tenshin.
More Basic Machiwara Drills August 7th, 2009 — Artis Pabriks had another outdoor training session with his deshi Janis Derkusovs. They continued working on more basic machiwara drills. Below, Artis strikes the machiwara using Jigotai stance.

Tsuki with Trunk Rotations One of the advantages of an outdoor machiwara is that one can move around it. In this case, Artis is using trunk rotations to strike the machiwara.
